Baltic Avenue Drainage Canal Improvement Project

Atlantic City, NJ

Engineering flood control infrastructure to protect 55 acres of Atlantic City.

Ardurra delivered a comprehensive flood control solution for the City of Atlantic City by redesigning and upgrading the Baltic Avenue Drainage Canal to resolve severe flooding that impacted 55 acres of the community. The city's Altantic Avenue Bridge Canal, a deteriorating asset, had elevated flood gates that allowed bay water to inundate streets during high tides and left no capacity to handle stormwater runoff, exposing residents and businesses to frequent property damage and daily disruption. Ardurra's team delivered a solution to modernize this critical infrastructure and restore its protective function. The project involved installing new, reliable flood gates to prevent tidal intrusion and constructing a powerful new pump station capable of discharging over 76,000 gallons per minute during heavy rainfall. This integrated system empowers the City to proactively manage water levels, providing immediate relief from flooding. A key part of Ardurra's collaborative approach was reevaluating the initial project design, which led to engineering modifications that saved the City over $5 million in construction costs. This successful partnership has revitalized critical public infrastructure through cost-effective, fiscally responsible engineering solutions without compromising quality or impact.

Key Highlights:

  • Solved chronic tidal and stormwater flooding for a 55-acre area by installing new flood gates and a 76,000 GPM pump station, safeguarding homes, businesses, and public infrastructure from recurring water damage.

  • Saved the City over $5 million through a strategic redesign of the project, demonstrating a commitment to providing cost-effective, fiscally responsible engineering solutions without compromising on quality or impact.

  • Successfully integrated modern flood control technology with the original ACEC canal, retrofitting new components to revitalize a critical piece of infrastructure and extend its service life for decades to come.

  • The new pump station is supported by a 200kW emergency generator, ensuring uninterrupted operation during power outages and providing reliable flood protection when the community needs it most.

Ardurra successfully delivered the Baltic Avenue Drainage Canal Improvement Project, providing Atlantic City with a reliable, modern flood-control system that protects 55 acres of the community from tidal and stormwater flooding. The project's $5 million in cost savings and award-winning recognition as ACEC/NJ's Project of the Year reflect Ardurra's commitment to fiscally responsible, high-impact engineering. This project strengthens Ardurra's position as a trusted partner for complex municipal infrastructure in the New Jersey coastal market.
