Structural assessment and repair design for PCCA Bulk Dock 1 and crane rails
Ardurra delivered structural assessment and repair design services for the PCCA Bulk Dock 1 Restoration and Crane Rail Replacement project, addressing critical infrastructure needs while maintaining port operations and increasing throughput capacity. The scope encompassed visual condition assessment of the main dock and east/west trestle superstructures and substructures, with structural analysis determining existing capacity and post-repair performance in accordance with the ASCE Waterfront Facilities Inspection and Assessment Manual.
The assessment assigned a "good" rating to substructure systems and a "fair" rating to superstructures, resulting in multiple repair types and quantity estimates for the overall repair package. The critical challenge was to provide immediate throughput capacity increases, as the new $40 million Bulk Materials Dock 3 facility required 2-3 years for completion, necessitating short-term strengthening modifications to the existing infrastructure.
Key Engineering Services:
-
Conducted structural assessment of main dock and trestle systems using ASCE Waterfront Facilities standards with capacity analysis
-
Developed repair design package, including plans, specifications, and Opinion of Probable Construction Costs for accurate contractor bidding
-
Replaced the 60-year-old gantry crane rail system, accommodating new crane technology for increased ship off-loading throughput capacity
-
Created short-term capacity solutions through strengthening modifications to Bulk Dock 1 and trestles during continued operations
-
Designed common and specialty concrete repairs with technical specifications supporting an extended useful design life
-
Coordinated with operations personnel, ensuring repairs were completed safely without significant impact to construction or facility operations
-
Addressed immediate throughput needs while the long-term Dock 3 facility remained in development phases
The restoration provides PCCA with enhanced dock capacity and extended infrastructure life while demonstrating effective coordination between engineering design, construction activities, and ongoing port operations. Repair prioritization and crane rail replacement enable immediate throughput improvements supporting regional maritime commerce.
