Cove Road PD&E

FDOT District 4, Martin County, FL

Expanding a critical corridor to improve safety and connectivity.

Ardurra conducted a comprehensive Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study for Cove Road widening from 76/Kanner Highway to SR 5/US-1, addressing critical traffic congestion and safety concerns while enhancing multimodal connectivity for the Martin County community. The study evaluated strategic alternatives to expand the corridor from two to four lanes while integrating comprehensive transportation improvements.

The analysis encompasses viable alignment alternatives incorporating multimodal features, such as sidewalks and shared-use paths, to improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. The team evaluated existing signalized intersection upgrades and identified locations for new traffic signals to optimize traffic flow and safety throughout the corridor.

Key Study Components:

  • Evaluating corridor expansion from two to four lanes along Cove Road from 76/Kanner Highway to SR 5/US-1
  • Analyzing multimodal enhancements, including sidewalk installation and shared-use path integration for improved connectivity
  • Assessing signalized intersection upgrades and identifying optimal locations for new traffic signal installations
  • Designing comprehensive drainage systems to manage stormwater effectively throughout the expanded corridor
  • Developing signing and pavement marking improvements, ensuring clear wayfinding and enhanced safety measures
  • Exploring viable alternatives and alignments to minimize environmental and community impacts while maximizing transportation benefits
  • Addressing traffic congestion reduction through systematic capacity improvements and delay minimization strategies

The PD&E Study provided FDOT with data-driven recommendations for creating a safer and more efficient transportation network. The multimodal approach ensures that corridor improvements serve the diverse needs of the community while supporting Martin County's evolving transportation requirements and economic development goals.
