Smarter Infrastructure for a City That Never Stops Moving

The Houston Intelligent Transportation Systems (HITS) Program is a major federally-funded initiative designed to modernize how the City of Houston monitors, manages, and communicates roadway conditions. Spread across approximately 150 arterial corridors in 16 zones citywide, the project deploys a robust technology network that includes 91 Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), 113 Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, 144 mid-block radar count stations, 489 enhanced intersection detection systems, and citywide wireless (WiMAX) communications.

These systems continuously collect, analyze, and relay traffic data to Houston TranStar and partner agencies, enabling faster incident detection, coordinated emergency response, and improved day-to-day traffic operations. The public benefits from real-time travel times, incident alerts, and recommended alternate routes provided through DMS and Houston TranStar’s website.

HITS enhances mobility, reduces congestion and emissions, supports safer and more efficient travel, and strengthens Houston’s ability to manage regional traffic conditions in real time.

Key Highlights:

  • Provides real-time incident response for emergencies

  • Provides the public with real-time traffic information

  • Improves traffic flow and corridor reliability
