Lower Buckeye Road from Litchfield Road to Agua Fria River

Funding the Infrastructure Avondale Needs to Grow
The City of Avondale secured $11 million in grant funding for the widening of West Lower Buckeye Road from Litchfield Road to the west bank of the Agua Fria River through the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Arterial Widening Program (AWP). Based on the strength of the application prepared by the Ardurra funding team, MAG allocated and programmed the project in its Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan, ensuring alignment with regional priorities and utilizing federal transportation funds.
The project will complete missing infrastructure segments not addressed by prior development, supporting full build-out as envisioned in Avondale’s Transportation Master Plan. Improvements will include ADA-compliant sidewalks, bicycle lanes, multi-use paths, landscaping with irrigation, street lighting, and stormwater management systems. Utility relocations and infrastructure for future traffic signals at key intersections will be included, along with Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components to enhance safety and operations.
Right-of-way acquisition, property demolition, and restoration of driveway entrances and landscaping will also be completed. These upgrades are critical to preparing the corridor for anticipated growth and increased traffic from the upcoming construction of State Route 30.
The project funding will:
-
Expand roadway capacity by converting a two-lane segment into four lanes with a raised landscaped median.
-
Enhance safety and access by adding dedicated left- and right-turn lanes.
-
Strengthen regional connectivity by improving a vital arterial linking neighborhoods, employment centers, and key assets like MC-85, Phoenix-Goodyear Airport, and Festival Fields Regional Park.
-
Support multimodal transportation by improving conditions for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
-
Prepare for future growth by providing access to planned facilities such as Avondale’s Traffic and Parks Operations Facility.
