Lower Buckeye Road from S 12th Avenue to S 107th Avenue

Avondale, AZ

Widening the Road to Avondale's Future.

The Ardurra funding team developed a highly rated application for the City of Avondale, which secured over $11 million in grant funding for the widening of Lower Buckeye Road between South 127th Avenue and South 107th Avenue through the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Arterial Widening Program (AWP). MAG allocated and programmed the project in its Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan, ensuring alignment with regional priorities and utilizing federal transportation funds.

Currently, this 2-mile corridor consists mainly of two lanes with limited sidewalks and curb improvements. While key intersections have been upgraded, the remaining segments lack sufficient capacity and multimodal facilities. The widening will add two continuous lanes in each direction, a landscaped median, and a two-way center turn lane. Additional improvements include ADA-compliant sidewalks, bike lanes, multi-use paths, dedicated turn lanes, landscaping, street lighting, stormwater facilities, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components. Utility relocations and driveway restoration will also be completed.

Lower Buckeye Road serves as a vital east-west arterial connecting residential neighborhoods, schools, employment centers, and regional assets such as the SRP Substation, La Joya Community High School, and the Agua Fria River trail system. Timely widening is essential to accommodate growing traffic volumes and anticipated demand from the future State Route 30 corridor. This investment will improve roadway capacity, reduce congestion, enhance safety, and support regional economic development.

  • Critical Corridor Upgrade: Widening Lower Buckeye Road from two lanes to four continuous lanes will relieve congestion, improve safety, and accommodate future traffic demand from the planned State Route 30 corridor.

  • Enhanced Multimodal Connectivity: Project includes ADA-compliant sidewalks, bike lanes, multi-use paths, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components, promoting safe and efficient travel for all users.

  • Community and Economic Impact: The improved east-west arterial will strengthen connections between neighborhoods, schools, employment centers, and regional assets, supporting growth and economic development.
