New Department of Public Works Building
Collingswood, NJ
A Modern Hub for Municipal Operations
Ardurra delivered environmental, geotechnical, civil and site design, permitting, and construction support services for the Borough of Collingswood's new Department of Public Works facility on a 1.8-acre site at Sloan and Harrison Avenues. The project replaces a fragmented, outdated operation with a centralized, purpose-built facility supporting all Borough DPW functions.
Key Highlights:
-
New 22,000 SF multiuse building includes five garage bays, climate-controlled offices, and locker rooms; a 3,200 SF prefabricated vinyl-composite storage building provides secure on-site equipment storage
-
Environmental investigations identified historic fill and a former heating oil Underground Storage Tank (UST); remedial actions were implemented in full compliance with NJDEP standards
-
Geotechnical analysis identified unsuitable soils requiring Controlled Modulus Columns and a Load Transfer Platform to achieve a 4,000 psf bearing capacity, with additional recommendations for site preparation, compaction, foundation design, dewatering, and settlement mitigation
-
Facility designed EV-ready and solar photovoltaic-ready, positioning the Borough for future sustainability investments without requiring immediate capital outlay
-
Site design maximizes the constrained 1.8-acre footprint with efficient vehicle circulation, parking, stormwater management, and wetlands buffer protection
The completed facility consolidates Collingswood's public works operations under one roof, resolving longstanding space and functionality constraints while establishing a sustainable, future-ready municipal hub.
