Bridging Two Shore Communities — Construction Management for a Coastal Infrastructure Replacement
Ardurra provided construction management and construction inspection services for the replacement of Spans 1 through 7 of the Ocean Drive Bridge over Townsends Inlet, connecting the Borough of Avalon and the City of Sea Isle City. Routine biennial inspections identified deterioration and scour in the existing spans, requiring full replacement of the 1,373-foot segment using combined County and NJDOT funding.
Key Highlights:
-
Scope included demolition of Spans 1–7 on the Avalon side, removal of existing piles, construction of three new pile-supported concrete piers, a new pile-supported cast-in-place south abutment, and structural steel tie-in at Pier 7
-
Pretensioned prestressed concrete beams, new concrete bridge deck and sidewalk, strip seal expansion joints, four-bar bridge railings, and new light standards completed the superstructure
-
Permanent sheeting along the concrete roadway and riprap placement around the new abutment addressed long-term scour and erosion protection
-
Aggressive winter construction schedule required non-typical work sequencing, with Ardurra ensuring the right personnel were present at all coordination meetings to manage unforeseen conditions as they arose
-
Construction management activities included schedule and progress reviews, payment documentation processing, bi-weekly progress meetings, and a NICET-certified inspection team
Ardurra's proactive coordination and experienced inspection team kept the project on track through challenging environmental conditions and schedule pressures, delivering a fully reconstructed coastal bridge span for Cape May County.
