Landscape design integrating stormwater and aesthetics along 1.5-mile airport drive

Ardurra designed a landscape construction package for the 1.5-mile Airport Drive Inbound extension at Spokane International Airport, representing the first phase of a three-phase initiative that reroutes arriving vehicular traffic to a planned new terminal. The design integrates essential stormwater management with highly visible landscape plantings within a constrained 20-foot landscape buffer, creating functional infrastructure that enhances the passenger arrival experience.

The solution features an undulating landscape of rises and valleys seamlessly incorporating both functional and aesthetic requirements. Strategic design elements include colorful, drought-tolerant plant materials positioned atop rolling berms above roadway level, while stormwater management utilizes underground pipes and sodded open channels, creating dynamic visual interest for passengers traveling at various speeds.

Key Landscape Design Features:

  • Designed a 1.5-mile landscape package for Airport Drive Inbound extension supporting new terminal traffic rerouting initiative

  • Integrated stormwater management with highly visible landscape plantings within a constrained 20-foot buffer zone

  • Created undulating landscape topography featuring rises and valleys, seamlessly accommodating functional and aesthetic requirements

  • Selected drought-tolerant plant materials providing colorful displays positioned strategically atop rolling berms above roadway elevation

  • Engineered dual stormwater conveyance utilizing underground pipes and sodded open channels for effective drainage management

  • Designed a dynamic passenger experience, creating a stimulating visual environment for both high-speed and low-speed vehicular traffic

  • Established the first phase foundation for the three-phase airport traffic rerouting and terminal development program

The landscape design provides Spokane International Airport with an enhanced arrival experience while demonstrating innovative approaches to integrating infrastructure functionality with aesthetic enhancement. Strategic plant selection and topographic design create lasting visual impact while supporting essential stormwater management objectives within space-constrained airport environments.
