Design optimizations achieving cost and schedule savings on $368M project

Ardurra partnered with the Asphalt Group to deliver design optimizations for Florida's Turnpike Enterprise's $368 million capacity expansion project, achieving significant cost and schedule reductions through strategic engineering solutions. The project revisions included Alternative Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) plans, an optimized Okeechobee Road Interchange design, and modified pavement specifications for the mainline and ramp infrastructure.

The enhanced TTC design eliminated two major temporary bridges from the original Bid Plans, enabling substantial reduction in overall construction duration while maintaining traffic flow throughout the corridor. Strategic phasing modifications at the NW 170 Street interchange reduced construction complexity by eliminating two major phases, enabling completion of the mainline bridge replacement in a single phase.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Collaborated on $368 million capacity expansion, implementing strategic design revisions, reducing costs, and construction duration

  • Enhanced TTC design eliminated two major temporary bridges, achieving substantial construction timeline reduction while maintaining traffic operations

  • Optimized NW 170 Street interchange phasing, reducing from multiple phases to a single-phase mainline bridge replacement

  • Introduced strategic traffic diversions utilizing future ramp alignments for northbound and southbound operations

  • Implemented Cost Savings Initiative at Okeechobee Road, adding a median pier along US 27 and reducing the mainline profile by 3 feet

  • Achieved major cost and time savings through innovative US 27 overpass construction optimization and profile reduction

  • Modified pavement design specifications across mainline and ramps, supporting enhanced performance and construction efficiency

The optimization demonstrates innovative value engineering approaches while maintaining project quality and safety standards. Strategic design modifications provided Florida's Turnpike Enterprise with substantial cost savings and accelerated project delivery, supporting regional mobility improvements.
