Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center

Weehawken, NJ

A new waterfront park and recreation center to enhance community recreation and open space along the Hudson River.

Ardurra served as subconsultant to RSC Architects for design and prime for construction management on the Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center, a new 0.69-acre parcel development along the Hudson River overlooking the New York City skyline. The project encompassed development of a new waterfront park comprising full basketball courts, volleyball courts, a covered combined structure incorporating a concession stand with outside cafe, restrooms, and a lifeguard station, a swimming pool, splash pool, wading pool, pump room, pool deck, and a pedestrian walking bridge that crosses a cove of the Hudson River to connect to the inland harbor community park. Ardurra also provided additional design services for an access road with traffic circle and drop-off and associated site utilities, stormwater management, lighting, walkways, and amenities. These services included supplemental design and construction-phase services for excess soil management, utility redesigns, and pool house entrance and canopy modifications for the Waterfront Park municipal pool and future fire station complex. Due to the complexities of the project site, environmental permitting and coordination with several agencies was required, including NJ Army Corps of Engineers, NJ Coast Guard, NJ Department of Environmental Protection Coastal Permit for Waterfront Development, On-Water and Upland Individual Permit and Tidelands Conveyance, and NJ Department of Environmental Protection Coastal General Permit.

Key Highlights:

  • A unique aspect of the project included surcharging of the site with additional soil to consolidate the existing poor soil in order to minimize settlement.

  • The project included the design of a pile foundation system to support all structures in order to minimize settlement and isolate contaminated soils.

  • Ardurra designed a new environmental capping system due to the complexities of the project site.

  • Environmental permitting required coordination with multiple agencies, including NJ Army Corps of Engineers, NJ Coast Guard, and NJDEP Coastal Permits.

Ardurra successfully delivered engineering design and construction management services for the Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center, creating a new community asset along the Hudson River that provides recreational amenities for the Township's residents. The project's resolution of complex soil, environmental, and permitting challenges demonstrates Ardurra's ability to navigate high-complexity urban waterfront development from concept through construction.
