Expanding Critical Care Access for Women and Newborns

Ardurra delivered site and civil engineering services for a five-story, 99,000 SF expansion and renovation at St. Luke's Allentown Hospital, enabling the facility to increase annual births from 1,450 to 2,200 and elevate its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from Level II to Level III status.

Key Highlights:

  • Full land development plans supported construction of the new five-story Women and Babies Pavilion, including selective demolition of the existing east wing and complete site infrastructure reconfiguration

  • NICU upgraded from Level II to Level III, delivering improved critical care access to the region's most vulnerable patients

  • Dedicated Obstetrics elevator additions and Emergency Department access improvements resolved longstanding operational circulation challenges

  • Scope included grading, stormwater conveyance, retaining wall coordination, utility design, sewage facilities planning, site lighting, parking reconfiguration, and zoning/code analysis

  • Secured all Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) permits for pedestrian and traffic improvements along the hospital's primary frontage

The completed project substantially expands St. Luke's capacity to serve women and newborns in the Lehigh Valley, with improved site access and functional circulation supporting both staff efficiency and patient experience.
