Ardurra receives ACEC Outstanding Project Award for SR 44 Whitehair Bridge Replacement Project

Ardurra is proud to announce that we have received the 2024 Outstanding Project Award from the American Consulting Engineering Council (ACEC) Florida for the SR 44 Whitehair Bridge Replacement Project.

This project, which began in 2020 and concluded in November 2023, stands as a testament to exceptional engineering, community collaboration, and environmental stewardship.

Key Features

  • Innovative Design and Enhanced Functionality: The new SR 44 Whitehair Bridge, which replaced the original drawbridge built in 1955, spans the St. Johns River 180-foot channel with a 45-foot vertical clearance. This significant upgrade facilitates smoother transportation and allows for larger marine vessels.
  • Improved Traffic Flow: Connecting Volusia and Lake counties, the bridge serves as a crucial link, accommodating the daily travel needs of approximately 14,000 vehicles. The enhanced design aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, providing a more efficient commute for residents and travelers.
  • Environmental Considerations: The project places a strong emphasis on environmental protection. Measures were taken to minimize the impact on local wildlife, including manatees, and to preserve the surrounding ecosystems. The bridge's design integrates seamlessly with the environment, ensuring a sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
  • Community Engagement: Throughout the project, Ardurra worked closely with local stakeholders, residents, and governmental agencies to address community needs and concerns. This collaborative approach ensured that the project not only met technical standards but also aligned with the values and priorities of the community.

Recognition and Awards
The SR 44 Whitehair Bridge Replacement Project was recently celebrated for its excellence in engineering and community impact. On June 6th, at the ACEC Florida Transportation Conference, David Coleman, Regional Director for Florida Transportation at Ardurra, accepted the Outstanding Project Award.

"We are extremely grateful for this recognition from ACEC Florida and FDOT," said David Coleman, Regional Director for Florida Transportation at Ardurra. "The SR 44 Whitehair Bridge Replacement Project reflects our commitment to engineering excellence while prioritizing sustainability and community impact. This award is a testament to the adaptability and hard work of our entire team and the strong partnerships we've built along the way."

Project Significance
The new SR 44 bridge is the heart of FDOT’s $47 million roadway improvement project. It is designed to improve commerce through streamlined transportation routes, offer more recreational areas for the public, and cut down on maintenance costs for an outdated bascule bridge. The historic Whitehair Bridge, a dual leaf drawbridge built in 1955, required frequent repairs due to its age. With its replacement now operational, FDOT intends to demolish the old bridge, further reducing maintenance costs.

The SR 44 Whitehair Bridge Replacement Project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a symbol of progress, resilience, and forward-thinking engineering. By addressing both current and future transportation needs, the project exemplifies Ardurra's commitment to building infrastructure that serves communities sustainably and efficiently.
