Burton Way Median Green Streets and Water-Efficient Landscape wins APWA Southern California Chapter B.E.S.T. Award (Stormwater Quality)

The Burton Way Median Green Streets Project in Beverly Hills, CA, is a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing urban sustainability and water conservation. Officially inaugurated on February 28, 2024, this project transformed the median along Burton Way—stretching from Rexford Drive to Oakhurst Drive—into the city's first "Green Street."

Key Features of the Project:

  • Stormwater Management: The project incorporates two 15-foot-wide infiltration swales designed to capture and treat urban runoff. These bioswales filter pollutants such as metals and bacteria, preventing them from reaching the Ballona Creek and Santa Monica Bay.
  • Water Conservation: A 1-million-gallon underground reservoir stores the treated runoff, which is then used to irrigate the median's landscape. This system is projected to save approximately 5 million gallons of water annually, aligning with the city's broader sustainability goals.
  • Drought-Resistant Landscaping: The median features over 16 species of native, water-efficient plants. These plants not only reduce the need for potable water but also enhance the area's aesthetic appeal.
  • Public Art Integration: The design thoughtfully incorporates existing public art pieces, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and culture.
