Charter Oak Elevated Tank wins ACEC-SC Engineering Excellence Award

This project in Lexington, South Carolina, has received an Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina. Located across from Lexington High School, this project was designed not only to improve local water infrastructure but to serve as a symbol of community pride and collaboration.

Beyond its technical scope, the project brought together local students and community members, exemplifying the power of collaboration. Under the guidance of Lexington High School art teacher Allan Anderson, students designed the tank’s logo, a striking image that features the school’s beloved wildcat mascot alongside local symbols, including Lake Murray, and a tribute to the area’s agricultural heritage. The resulting design has turned the tank into a beacon of local identity and was recognized as one of North America’s Top 10 tanks—a testament to the community’s enthusiasm and connection to the project.

The tank also serves an essential functional purpose. Built to enhance water pressure, the storage tank is a critical upgrade for Lexington’s water system, boosting capacity to attract businesses, support economic growth, and ensure the community’s long-term health, environmental stability, and quality of life.

The involvement of Lexington High School students in the logo design fostered a unique sense of ownership and pride among the younger generation, highlighting the value of community-driven projects. This award-winning project stands as a model for engineering that combines technical innovation with meaningful local engagement.

Jay Nicholson, Joint Municipal Water & Sewer Commission’s General Manager & CEO, commented, "The WK Dickson team collaborated with us throughout the development and construction phases, and we are delighted with the outcome. Additionally, the neighboring high school's contribution to the tank's graphic design has been a remarkable bonus, turning the tank into a symbol of community unity and pride.
