I-4 Sand Lake Road DDI Interchange Improvements Design-Build
Orange County, FL
Diverging Diamond Interchange design enhancing I-4 and Sand Lake Road
Ardurra leads design services for the I-4 and Sand Lake Road Interchange transformation as part of the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate (BTU) corridor plan, reconfiguring the interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) to enhance traffic flow and safety. The project includes a direct westbound I-4 connection to Turkey Lake Road and I-4 reconstruction from west of Sand Lake Road to I-4 Ultimate limits, incorporating barrier-separated express lanes and buffered express lane infrastructure.
Working as part of the Lane/DRMP team, Ardurra serves as lead designer for Temporary Traffic Control Plans and temporary drainage systems, ensuring construction efficiency while maintaining safety and mobility throughout the corridor. The temporary DDI concept offers early operational benefits by allowing most construction activities to occur out of traffic, thereby minimizing disruptions to this heavily traveled corridor.
Key Project Highlights:
-
Designed Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) reconfiguring I-4 and Sand Lake Road for improved traffic flow and enhanced safety
-
Created a direct westbound I-4 connection to Turkey Lake Road, supporting regional connectivity and traffic distribution
-
Incorporated barrier-separated express lanes with a buffered express lane on westbound I-4 between Sand Lake Road and Central Florida Parkway
-
Managed significant bridge infrastructure, including two bridge replacements, two new ramp bridges, and one bridge widening project
-
Implemented an innovative temporary DDI concept providing early operational benefits while enabling construction out of traffic
-
Led the design of the Temporary Traffic Control Plan, ensuring construction efficiency while prioritizing corridor safety and mobility
-
Designed temporary drainage systems, maintaining effective stormwater management throughout complex construction phases
The DDI implementation demonstrates innovative interchange design while supporting I-4 BTU corridor objectives. Strategic temporary construction approaches minimize traffic disruptions while delivering enhanced capacity and safety improvements for this critical Central Florida transportation corridor.
