SR 1 Bridge Over Southern Railroad Broadway Viaduct

 Knoxville, Tennessee

Ardurra (CCI) assisted TDOT with a complex bridge replacement project spanning two separate multi-track Norfolk Southern Railway lines in downtown Knoxville. The bridge, located on Broadway and SR 1 between Oak Avenue and West Depot Avenue, presented unique urban infrastructure challenges requiring detailed coordination with Norfolk Southern Railway and numerous utility providers to successfully integrate all design aspects, including roadway, bridge structures, proposed drainage systems, railroad operations, and extensive utility realignments. Close collaboration with TDOT was maintained throughout the project duration to ensure compliance with all state requirements and standards.

The roadway alignment was strategically shifted to avoid interference with local business operations, while the existing wye track within the project limits required relocation by the Railroad Consultant. Our team collaborated extensively with the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) to design the relocation of existing electrical facilities in accordance with TDOT specifications and requirements.

This multifaceted project involved two new bridge designs, featuring both box and truss configurations, over an active railroad switchyard. The comprehensive utility relocation scope addressed both overhead facilities attached to the existing bridge and underground infrastructure at the bridge base and approaches. Major utility relocations included approximately 700 linear feet of overhead distribution lines, installation of 700 linear feet of underground primary electrical service, complete lighting design for the new bridge structure, relocation of a 4-inch PE gas line from the existing viaduct to underground placement, relocation of 8-inch and 12-inch water lines from both underground and viaduct-mounted locations, and sewer system relocation at the viaduct approaches.
