SR 29 Intersection at I-40 WB Off-Ramp
Harriman, Tennessee
As part of an ongoing TDOT On-Call Traffic Engineering Services Contract, Ardurra (CCI) was requested to provide surveying and engineering design services for critical ramp and intersection improvements at the westbound I-40 ramp and its intersection with SR 29 in Harriman, Tennessee. This location was identified through both a Road Safety Audit (RSAR) and the Ramp Queue Program, requiring immediate attention to address excessive vehicle delays and the dangerous potential for westbound vehicles to queue back onto the mainline of I-40 westbound.
The comprehensive project improvements included widening the westbound ramp to provide two separate lanes approaching the intersection with SR 29, the installation of a new traffic signal system at the SR 29 and westbound ramp intersection, and the implementation of associated signing, pavement markings, and drainage improvements. Our team developed all project plans in accordance with TDOT standards and specifications, ensuring seamless integration with state infrastructure requirements and construction processes.
This improvement project addresses both safety and operational concerns by eliminating hazardous queuing conditions on the interstate mainline, while enhancing traffic flow efficiency for the thousands of vehicles that utilize this interchange daily.
